What is the Sign PDF Tool?

The days of printing out a contract, signing it with a pen, scanning it back into the computer, and emailing it are over. Our Sign PDF tool is a complete electronic signature (eSign) solution that allows you to sign documents entirely in your web browser.

Whether you need to quickly sign a lease agreement, authorize a business contract, or fill out a W-4 form, this tool provides a legally binding, secure, and incredibly fast way to apply your signature to any PDF document.

Why eSign Your Documents?

Electronic signatures have revolutionized how business is conducted, offering massive advantages over traditional "wet ink" signatures.

You should eSign your documents to:

  • Save Time and Money: Eliminate the cost of printer ink, paper, and postage. A document that used to take days to mail and sign can now be executed in 30 seconds.
  • Increase Convenience: You can sign a time-sensitive contract from anywhere in the world, right from your smartphone or tablet, without needing access to an office scanner.
  • Prevent Document Tampering: When you apply a signature and download the final PDF, the signature is permanently flattened onto the document, preventing anyone from easily altering the underlying agreement.

Key Features

  • Multiple Signature Methods: Choose the method that works best for you. You can draw your signature using your mouse or touchscreen, type your name using a stylized cursive font, or upload a scanned image of your real signature.
  • Form Filling Capabilities: It's not just for signing! The tool also includes a text editor, allowing you to type your printed name, the date, and fill in blank lines on the contract before you sign it.
  • Optimized for Touch: The drawing tool is highly responsive and optimized for mobile devices and tablets, allowing you to draw a smooth, natural-looking signature using your finger or a stylus.
  • Bank-Level Security: Your contracts are highly confidential. The connection is secured with HTTPS, and your uploaded documents and signature images are permanently deleted from our servers immediately after your session.

Real-World Use Cases

The ability to sign documents online is a daily necessity across almost every industry:

Freelancers and Contractors

When a freelancer wins a new project, the client often requires a signed Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) or a Statement of Work before they can begin. The freelancer uses the Sign PDF tool to quickly draw their signature on the contract and email it back, ensuring the project starts immediately.

Real Estate Transactions

Buying or renting property involves a mountain of paperwork. Tenants and buyers frequently use eSign tools to sign lease agreements, disclosures, and addendums directly from their phones while touring a property, speeding up the closing process.

Human Resources

HR departments constantly send onboarding forms (like I-9s, W-4s, and direct deposit authorizations) to new hires. The new employees can use this tool to fill in their personal information, type their signature, and return the secure PDF without ever touching a printer.

Best Practices and Tips

To ensure your electronic signatures are professional and secure, follow these guidelines:

  1. Use a Stylus for Drawing: If you choose to draw your signature, doing it with a mouse can look jagged and unprofessional. If possible, open the tool on your smartphone or iPad and draw it with your finger or an Apple Pencil for a much smoother result.
  2. Flatten the Document: When you download the signed file, our tool automatically "flattens" the signature onto the page. This is a crucial security step that ensures the recipient cannot simply click your signature and drag it onto a different contract.
  3. Combine with Protect PDF: If you are signing a highly confidential document (like an executive employment offer), sign it first, and then run the finalized PDF through our Protect PDF tool to add an encryption password before emailing it back.

Troubleshooting

  • My drawn signature looks messy: Drawing with a computer mouse is notoriously difficult. Try using the "Type" option instead to generate a clean, cursive signature, or use the tool on a touchscreen device.
  • I can't edit the existing text on the contract: The Sign PDF tool is designed as an overlay (like writing on top of a piece of paper). It allows you to add new text and signatures. It does not allow you to erase or modify the original text of the contract.
  • The tool won't accept my signature image: If you are uploading an image of your signature, ensure it is a .png or .jpg file. For the best results, use a .png with a transparent background so it blends perfectly onto the document page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are electronic signatures legally binding? In most countries (including the US under the ESIGN Act, and the EU under eIDAS), standard electronic signatures are legally binding for the vast majority of business and personal contracts. However, for extremely sensitive legal documents (like wills or property deeds), some jurisdictions still require a notarized wet ink signature.

Does this tool save my signature for later? No. For your security and privacy, we do not store your signature data, drawn images, or uploaded files on our servers after your session ends. You must apply your signature during the active session.

Can I request someone else to sign the document? Currently, our tool is designed for you to sign a document you already possess (self-signing). It does not currently feature a workflow to email a document to a third party and track their signature.

How do I type text onto the date and name lines? Along with the signature tool, the interface includes a "Text" button. Click it to create a text box, type the date or your printed name, and drag the text box perfectly onto the blank line of the form.

Is it safe to upload confidential contracts here? Absolutely. Your privacy is our top priority. All file transfers are secured with SSL/TLS encryption. We do not read, analyze, or store your contracts; they are automatically and permanently deleted from our servers shortly after processing.
